Mathematics: Entry Level 2

This Entry Level 2 Maths course builds on early numeracy skills and introduces learners to more confident, practical mathematics. Through clear explanations and real-world examples, learners improve their understanding of numbers up to 200, money calculations, time, basic fractions, measurements, shapes, charts, and simple data.

This course covers all required Entry Level 2 competencies, including:

1. Numbers, Calculations & Place Value

Learners will:

  • Count reliably up to 100 items.

  • Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 200.

  • Recognise and sequence odd and even numbers up to 100.

  • Use mathematical symbols +, , ×, ÷, = correctly.

  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers.

  • Multiply using 0×0 to 12×12 times tables.

  • Divide 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and express remainders.

  • Round numbers to the nearest 10 and use this to check answers.

2. Fractions & Decimals

Learners practise simple fractional and decimal concepts:

  • Recognise halves, quarters, and tenths of whole numbers and shapes.

  • Read, write and use decimals to one decimal place.

3. Money, Time & Everyday Measures

This course includes practical real-life maths such as:

  • Calculating money with pence up to £1, whole-pound items, and using £/p symbols.

  • Reading and recording time:

    • Analogue clocks in hours, half-hours, quarter-hours

    • 24-hour digital clocks

  • Using metric measures:

    • Length: mm, cm, m, km

    • Weight: g, kg

    • Capacity: ml, l

  • Reading and comparing positive temperatures.

  • Reading and using scales to the nearest labelled division.

4. Shapes, Space & Position

Learners will:

  • Recognise and name 2D & 3D shapes such as pentagons, hexagons, cylinders, cuboids, pyramids, spheres.

  • Describe shape properties (sides, edges, faces, corners, angles, base).

  • Use positional vocabulary including inside, outside, middle, below, forwards, backwards.

5. Handling Information & Data

At this level, learners begin working with more structured information:

  • Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts.

  • Make numerical comparisons using bar charts.

  • Sort and classify using two criteria.

  • Convert information from one format to another, including creating bar charts.
